uPVC Door Lock Replacement in Newcastle

When the handle goes floppy, the key spins without catching or the door simply refuses to lock, something inside the mechanism has usually broken. Adjustment will not bring a snapped part back, but the door itself rarely needs to go.

We replace failed multipoint lock strips, gearboxes and euro cylinders on uPVC front, back, patio and French doors, using quality branded parts carried on the van so most locks are working again in a single visit.

Signs the lock itself has failed

  • The handle drops loosely and no longer lifts the locking points
  • The key turns all the way round without throwing the lock
  • A grinding or clicking noise from inside the door edge
  • The door will not lock even when held tight against the frame
  • The key has snapped or jams part way in the cylinder
  • Locking points that stay retracted when the handle is lifted

When a lock needs replacing, not adjusting

Plenty of locking problems are really alignment problems. A door that has dropped forces the hooks and rollers to fight against the keeps, so the handle feels stiff and the key is hard to turn. Those cases are covered on our uPVC door repairs page, where lifting the leaf and resetting keeps is often the whole job.

Replacement comes in when a part has physically failed. A handle that falls limp, a key that turns freely and a mechanism that grinds whether the door is open or closed all point to something broken inside. Testing the door while it is open tells us a lot: if it still will not operate with nothing pressing against it, the mechanism is at fault rather than the alignment. Our guide on a uPVC door that will not lock walks through those checks.

Multipoint lock strips and gearboxes

A multipoint lock is a long strip running down the edge of the door, with a central gearbox behind the handle that drives hooks, rollers or bolts into the frame at several points. The gearbox is the part that usually gives way, because it takes the strain every time the handle is lifted.

Where the strip is in good condition, the gearbox can often be replaced on its own. Where several parts have worn, the whole strip is changed. Either way the new mechanism has to match the old one's dimensions so it fits the existing door and keeps without cutting the uPVC.

Euro cylinders and anti-snap upgrades

The cylinder is the part your key goes into. Older euro cylinders can be snapped by force, which is why we recommend upgrading to an anti snap, anti pick and anti drill cylinder that meets current standards whenever a cylinder is being replaced.

Cylinders can also be supplied keyed alike, so one key opens the front and back doors. A cylinder change is also the quick answer when keys have been lost or a tenant has moved out.

Patio and French door locks

Sliding patio doors use their own hook locks, and French doors have a master leaf and a slave leaf with shoot bolts at the top and bottom. Both need parts that suit the system rather than a standard front door mechanism. Running faults on sliding doors are explained on our patio door repairs page.

Matching a replacement to your door

Before a lock is replaced we check the backset, the centres between the handle and the cylinder, the type of locking points and the length of the strip. A handle that has simply snapped is a separate, smaller job, covered in our guide to uPVC door handle replacement.

Emergency lock failures (24 hour)

A lock that fails with the door open, or leaves the house unable to be locked at night, is treated as an emergency. Our emergency repairs service runs a 24 hour call out for insecure properties, and we make the door secure before anything else.

Multipoint lock replacement and repair

A multipoint lock is a long steel strip running down the edge of the door. In the middle is the gearbox, operated by the handle and key. Lifting the handle throws hooks, rollers or bolts at points above and below into keeps on the frame, pulling the door tight against its seals along its full height.

Failure shows in a few familiar ways. The handle goes floppy and will not lift. The key turns only halfway. The door will only lock when you push or slam it. Or the handle will not go down at all, leaving you stuck outside or locked in. A snapped gearbox can often be replaced on its own; a worn strip with damaged hooks usually means a full multipoint lock replacement.

On doors around Newcastle we commonly find mechanisms from makers such as Winkhaus, ERA, Yale and Fuhr, alongside many others. We identify the existing lock and fit a matching or compatible replacement, so you can change uPVC door locks without changing the door. The same applies to French door lock replacement and bifold door lock repair, where the mechanisms differ but the approach is the same. To strengthen the cylinder too, see anti snap locks, and for all hardware see hinges, locks and handles. Our guides to a uPVC door that will not lock and a key that will not turn help narrow down the fault.

When only the gearbox has failed

If the handle lifts but nothing locks, the gearbox is the likely culprit; see uPVC door mechanism replacement. For costs, read the uPVC door lock replacement cost guide, or try our DIY guide to replacing a uPVC door lock. Lockouts and snapped keys are covered by our Newcastle locksmith service.

Similar locking faults in composite entrances

For a composite leaf, see composite door lock replacement. Cylinder, gearbox and keep alignment are checked as separate possible causes of a door not securing.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I know if my uPVC door lock needs replacing?

If the handle flops, the key spins freely or the mechanism will not operate even with the door open, a part has broken and needs replacing rather than adjusting.

Can you replace just the gearbox rather than the whole lock?

Often, yes. If the rest of the multipoint strip is sound, a matching gearbox can be fitted on its own.

What is an anti-snap cylinder?

It is a euro cylinder designed to resist being snapped, picked or drilled, meeting current standards. We recommend one whenever a cylinder is changed.

Do you replace patio door locks?

Yes. We replace locks on sliding patio doors and French doors, using parts that suit each system.

Can you get my door locking tonight if the mechanism has failed?

A door that cannot be locked is treated as an emergency, and our 24 hour call out is there to make the property secure.

Are multipoint locks worth it?

Yes. Locking the door at several points along its height makes it harder to force and keeps it sealed against draughts, which is why they are standard on uPVC and composite doors.

Why is my door lock stuck or stiff?

Most often the door has dropped or moved, so the hooks and rollers drag on the keeps. A worn gearbox can feel the same. Adjusting the door may cure it; if not, the gearbox or strip is replaced.

Can you change uPVC door locks without changing the door?

Yes. The mechanism slides out of the door edge and a matching one goes in. The door, glass and frame stay as they are.

How much to replace a uPVC door lock?

It depends on whether only the cylinder, the gearbox or the full multipoint strip needs replacing. Our uPVC door repair cost guide lists the existing price ranges.
