Patio Door Rollers Replaced in Newcastle

A sliding patio door should glide with one hand. When it starts to grind, stick halfway or need your shoulder behind it, the rollers underneath are usually worn, cracked or clogged.

We replace patio door rollers and wheels and set the leaf back to the right height across Newcastle and the North East. It is a sliding door repair that sits under our patio door repairs service, and it usually brings a heavy door back to life without changing the door.

Signs the rollers have worn

  • The door is heavy or jerky to slide
  • A grinding or scraping noise from the bottom track
  • The door jumps or comes off the track
  • The bottom of the leaf rubs the frame
  • A gap appears at the top or one side when closed
  • The lock no longer lines up with the keep

What the rollers do

The sliding leaf of a patio door rests on a pair of roller carriages, one at each end of the bottom edge. Each carriage has one or more wheels that run on a raised track. The leaf is heavy because of the large glass unit, so those wheels carry a lot of weight every time the door moves.

Over time the wheels flatten, their bearings wear, or grit from the track gets ground into them. A cracked wheel can then cut into the track, making the door worse with every use.

How patio door wheels replacement is done

The leaf has to come off the track, which takes two people because of the weight of the glass. With it out, we remove the old carriages, check the track for wear or damage and clean it out. New rollers of the right size and type go in, the leaf goes back, and we adjust the height so it runs level and sits square to the frame.

Setting the height properly matters as much as the new wheels. It is what makes the door seal evenly and brings the lock back in line with its keep.

Rollers or lock?

Worn rollers often show up first as a lock problem, because a sunken leaf leaves the hooks below the keep. If the door slides freely but still will not lock, the fault is more likely in the lock itself; see patio door lock replacement. We check both on the same visit so you are not paying for the wrong part.

Keeping the track clean

Most roller wear starts with dirt. Vacuum the bottom track regularly and wipe it with a damp cloth, and avoid oil on the track because it holds grit. Our guide to patio door sliding problems covers other simple checks before you book.

Cost and booking

The existing range for patio roller replacement and realignment is around £120 to £250, depending on the number of rollers and the weight of the door. The price is confirmed at a free in-person quote. Telling us the width of the door and whether it is uPVC or aluminium helps. For aluminium sliding doors see also aluminium window and door repairs. Questions

Frequently asked

Can you replace patio door rollers without replacing the door?

Yes. The rollers sit in carriages under the sliding leaf, so we lift the leaf off, change the rollers and put the same door back.

Why does my sliding door keep coming off the track?

Usually a worn or broken roller, a damaged track or debris in the track. Once the rollers are replaced and the track cleaned, the leaf should stay on.

Is it safe to lift a patio door off myself?

A sliding leaf with a large glass unit is very heavy and awkward to handle. We do not recommend lifting it out alone.

Can a damaged patio door track be fixed?

Light wear and dents can often be smoothed out. A badly damaged track may need a cover or repair, which we discuss after seeing it.
