Safety glass for doors

Glass in and around doors sits in a critical location, where people can walk into it or fall against it. It needs to be safety glass, meaning toughened or laminated, so it either breaks into small blunt pieces or holds together when cracked. We fit safety glass in every door we reglaze.

Laminated glass also adds security, as it stays in the frame even when broken. If you are replacing glass after a break in, it is worth asking about. Toughened and laminated glass both appear in our cost to replace a double glazed unit guide.

uPVC and composite door glass replacement

In a uPVC door the glass unit is held by beads in the same way as a window, so it can be removed and replaced without taking the door off. Composite doors often have a glazed cassette set into the slab, and the approach depends on how that cassette is fixed. We check the door type before ordering glass so the new unit fits first time.

If the whole infill panel is damaged rather than just its glass, uPVC door panel replacement may be the better fix. Other composite faults are covered on composite door repairs.

Patio door glass replacement

Patio door panes are large and heavy, and they are always toughened. Replacing one means lifting the sliding leaf or working on the fixed pane in place, so we plan the visit around the size and access. For rollers, locks and tracks on the same door, see patio door repairs.

Misted glass in a door

If the glass in your door has gone cloudy between the panes, the sealed unit has failed. Nothing else on the door needs changing; we fit a new unit into the existing door. Our sealed unit replacement page explains how the unit itself is made.

Door glass replacement cost

People often look for cheap door glass replacement, and keeping the door is the main way to keep the price down. The cost depends on the size of the glass, whether it is toughened or laminated, whether it is patterned, and how the glass is held in the door. Our existing cost guides show patio door glass as quoted individually, because those large toughened units are priced on size and access.

Send a photo of the whole door and a close photo of the damaged glass, and we can tell you what is involved before the visit. The price is confirmed at a free in-person quote. To arrange it, request a quote or call us. If the door cannot be secured, call about emergency repairs.

Planning a flap in replacement door glazing

If the proposed change is a cat flap in glass, the flap requirements must be agreed before ordering the new sealed unit with its prepared opening.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much is sliding door glass replacement?

Sliding door panes are large toughened units, so they are quoted individually on size, glass type and access. Our patio door guide explains what affects the price, and we confirm it at a free in-person quote.

Do you have to replace the whole door if the glass breaks?

No. The glass is a separate part held in by beads or a cassette, so we replace it and keep the door, hinges and lock.

Can I change clear door glass to obscure glass?

Yes. When the glass is replaced you can choose patterned or obscure safety glass for more privacy, as long as it suits the size of the opening.

Is the glass in my door required to be safety glass?

Glass in and around doors should be toughened or laminated safety glass, because people can fall against it. We fit safety glass in every door we reglaze.
