Velux Window Repair and Roof Window Repairs in Newcastle

Roof windows take the worst of the weather. They face the sky, catch rain and frost directly and are often opened with a pole at an awkward angle, so their glass, seals and hinges wear differently from the windows in your walls.

We repair roof windows and skylights across Newcastle and the North East. People often call any roof window a Velux, and we use the name that way; we are an independent repair business, not a manufacturer approved installer. Roof window repairs sit under our wider window repairs service.

Roof window faults we repair

  • Misted or cracked glass units
  • Water getting in around the sash
  • Worn or perished seals and gaskets
  • Stiff, sticking or loose pivot hinges
  • Handles or catches that no longer lock
  • Draughts or whistling round the opening

Skylight glass replacement

Roof window glass is a sealed unit made for overhead glazing, usually with a toughened outer pane and a laminated inner pane so it holds together if it breaks. When it mists or cracks, we measure the unit and fit a new one into the existing sash. Skylight glass replacement keeps the frame and flashing in the roof, which avoids disturbing the tiles or slates.

For broken glass in ordinary windows, see window glass replacement.

Seals and leaks

A roof window that drips when it rains is often suffering from tired seals around the sash rather than a failed roof. The gaskets harden and shrink with years of sun and frost, and water finds its way past them. Replacing the seals is usually straightforward; see window seal replacement for how we approach seals in general.

If water is coming in around the outside of the frame instead, the flashing that joins the window to the roof may be the cause. We will tell you if that is a roofing job rather than a window repair.

Hinges, handles and operation

Many roof windows pivot in the middle so the outside can be turned in for cleaning. Those pivot hinges and the friction that holds the sash in position wear over time, and the window may flop open or refuse to stay put. Handles and catches also loosen. We check the full mechanism and replace the worn parts where suitable parts are available.

Repair or replace the roof window?

Because replacing a roof window means working on the roof covering, repair is usually the far simpler option. Where the frame itself has rotted or split, a new window may be needed, and we will explain that honestly. Most of the time the glass, seals or hinges are the only parts that have worn.

Booking a roof window repair

Tell us whether the window is in a loft room, a bathroom or a flat roof, roughly how high it is and what is wrong. A photo of the window and of any label on the frame helps us identify parts. We give a free in-person quote and confirm the price before starting. To book, request a quote or call us.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can the glass in a roof window be replaced without replacing the window?

Yes. The glass is a sealed unit in the sash and can be replaced while the frame and flashing stay in the roof.

Why does my roof window leak only in heavy rain?

Usually the seals around the sash have hardened, or the drainage channels are blocked. Clearing the channels and renewing seals often stops it.

Are you an official Velux installer?

No. We are an independent repair business. We use the name because many people call any roof window a Velux.

My roof window will not stay open. Can it be fixed?

That normally means the hinge friction or support mechanism has worn. Where parts are available, it can be repaired rather than replacing the window.
