When we board up a window

  • Glass broken during a break-in or attempted entry
  • Panes damaged by storms or falling debris
  • Accidental breakage from a ball, ladder or slammed sash
  • Cracked glass that could fall from the frame
  • Door glass that leaves the door insecure
  • Openings that cannot be glazed straight away

What a window board up involves

First, the loose and hanging glass is taken out so nothing can fall on anyone. Broken pieces are cleared from the frame and from the surrounding area. A sheet of board is then cut to the opening and fixed securely, either inside the frame or across it, depending on the window and how much of the glazing has gone.

The aim is an opening that cannot easily be pushed through and that keeps the rain out. Where only one pane of a double glazed unit is cracked and the window is still secure, boarding may not be needed at all, and we tell you so.

Boarding up versus glazing straight away

Double glazed units are made to measure, so a replacement cannot be carried on the van for every window. Boarding bridges the gap between the damage and the new unit arriving. Simple single panes can sometimes be glazed on the first visit, but most modern windows and doors need a sealed unit ordered to size, toughened or laminated where safety rules require it.

Emergency boarding up is about making a home safe today. The permanent repair follows on a return visit, and our sealed unit replacement page explains how that new unit is fitted in the existing frame.

After a break-in

If the damage follows a break-in, report it to the police and keep your crime reference. Avoid touching the frame more than you need to. When it is safe, take photographs of the damage for your insurer. Our guide to boarding up after a break-in covers what to do while you wait. A forced door or damaged lock can be dealt with on the same call out as the window.

Storm and accident damage

Wind-blown debris, a falling branch or a stray football all break glass. With storm damage we also look at whether the frame, hinges or beads have been strained, because a window that has been hit hard may not close properly once it is reglazed.

How to arrange boarding up

Call us and tell us where the broken glass is, roughly how big the opening is and whether the property can be locked. For anything that is not urgent, you can request a quote with photos and we will arrange the permanent glass.

Questions

Frequently asked

When does a window need boarding up rather than glazing straight away?

When the replacement glass has to be made to size, which is the case for most double glazed and safety glass units. Boarding keeps the home secure and dry until the new unit is ready to fit.

How long can a window stay boarded?

A properly fixed board is a temporary measure meant to last until the replacement glass is fitted. It is secure, but it blocks light and is not meant to stay in place indefinitely, so we measure for the new glass at the same time.

Will my insurer cover boarding up?

Many home insurance policies include emergency boarding and glass replacement, but cover varies. Check your policy or call your insurer, keep any crime reference, and photograph the damage when it is safe to do so.

What happens after boarding up?

We measure the opening, order the correct replacement glass or sealed unit and return to remove the board and glaze the window, checking the frame and hardware as we go.
