Common door faults and what is usually behind them
Most door problems trace back to a few causes. A door leaf is heavy and hangs on its hinges every hour of the day, so over time it settles. Once it sits lower than it should, the hooks and rollers no longer meet their keeps, the handle gets stiff and the edge starts to rub. Our guide to a front door that has dropped or is catching walks through the signs.
Locks fail in a different way. A gearbox inside a multipoint mechanism can snap after years of being forced, and a cylinder can wear until the key binds. If the door will not lock at all, the cause might be alignment or it might be inside the mechanism, and the two need different repairs. Draughts usually mean flattened seals or poor compression, and damaged glass is a sealed unit or panel job rather than a reason for a new door.
Which type of door do you have?
uPVC door repairs cover the most common front and back doors in the region, with their multipoint locks, flag hinges and seals. Composite door repairs deal with the heavier solid slab doors, where the extra weight makes dropping and hinge wear more likely. Timber doors need the wood considering as well as the fittings, and aluminium window and door repairs cover slimmer residential and commercial frames.
Doors that open in pairs or slide behave differently again. French door repairs look at two leaves meeting in the middle and the shootbolts that hold the second leaf. Patio door repairs focus on rollers and tracks, and bifold door repairs cover folding panels and their running gear. If the trouble is the hinges themselves, our door hinge repairs page goes into realignment and hinge replacement.
Repair first, replacement only when it is really needed
A door that will not lock feels like a door that has had its day, but that is rarely true. The frame, the leaf and the glass are usually sound, and the fault is a part that moves: a hinge, a gearbox, a cylinder, a keep or a seal. Replacing that part costs a fraction of a new door and leaves the rest of your door exactly as it was.
We only suggest replacement when a repair genuinely is not possible, for example where the frame itself has failed or parts for a very old system can no longer be matched.
Emergency door repairs after a break-in
A forced or damaged door that leaves the property unable to lock is treated as an emergency. Our 24 hour emergency call out covers the whole area we work in. The aim is to make the door secure first, then return to finish a full repair if parts have to be ordered. Our emergency window and door repairs page explains how that works and what to do while you wait.
What a door repair usually costs
Cost depends on which part has failed. Adjusting a dropped door is a smaller job than replacing a multipoint mechanism, and a cylinder change sits somewhere between. Our uPVC door repair cost guide sets out our own price ranges for each common job, and our door maintenance guide covers the simple care that keeps those bills away. Every price is confirmed once we have seen the door, and quotations in person are free.

Every door we repair, in one place
Searching for door repairs near me can turn up firms that only handle one material. As a local door repair business we cover the main types. Plastic doors are covered by uPVC door repairs, solid core doors by composite door repairs, and double doors by French door repairs. Sliding and folding doors have their own pages: patio door repairs and bifold door repairs. Shops and offices are covered by commercial door repairs.
By component, a dropped door is fixed under door hinge repairs, a failed mechanism under uPVC door lock replacement and a weak cylinder with anti snap locks.
More specific door jobs
Smaller jobs have their own pages too: uPVC door adjustment, uPVC door panel replacement and door glass replacement.
Letterbox flaps and surrounds
A worn postal opening need not mean a new entrance. See letterbox replacement for checking sizes, draught features and the condition of the surrounding panel or leaf.
Questions
Frequently asked
My door has dropped and catches on the frame. Can it be adjusted?
Often, yes. Most uPVC and composite door hinges have adjusters for height and side to side movement, and lifting the leaf back into position is frequently enough. If a hinge is worn or cracked, it is replaced instead.
Can you repair a door that will not lock?
Yes. We first check whether the door is out of line or whether the lock mechanism has failed. Alignment is corrected by adjustment, while a broken gearbox or worn cylinder is replaced with a matching part.
Do you repair composite as well as uPVC doors?
Yes. Composite doors are heavier and put more strain on their hinges, but their locks and adjusters work in a similar way. We repair timber and aluminium doors too.
Can you replace just the glass in a door?
Yes. A cracked or misted door unit can be replaced on its own, keeping the door and frame. Door glass is normally toughened, so the new unit is ordered to suit the opening.
Do you offer emergency door repairs?
Yes. If a door cannot be locked or closed after damage or a break-in, our 24 hour emergency call out is there to help make it secure.
Do you repair commercial doors?
Yes. We work for businesses as well as homeowners and landlords, and our commercial door repairs page covers shops, offices and other premises.
What is door repair and which doors do you cover?
Door repair means fixing the hinges, locks, handles, seals, glass or rollers rather than replacing the door. We cover uPVC, composite, timber and aluminium doors, including French, patio and bifold doors.
How much is glass door or sliding door repair?
It depends on the fault: rollers, tracks, locks or the glass unit itself. Our uPVC door repair cost guide lists the existing price ranges, and we confirm the price after inspecting.
Can my door be fixed on the first visit, or do parts need ordering?
Adjustments and common parts can often be dealt with when we first look at the door. Matching locks, made to measure glass and some specialist parts need ordering, and we tell you which applies at the inspection.
