Window Restrictor Fitting for uPVC Windows

A window restrictor limits how far an opening sash can travel. It addresses the opening distance, rather than replacing the handle or repairing the locking mechanism. Restrictors and lockable handles can be fitted to most uPVC windows, with suitability checked for the particular opening.

Window restrictor fitting is part of our hinges, locks and handles work. It can be considered for upstairs rooms, family homes and rented property. We assess the window itself before recommending a fitting, rather than treating one device as suitable for every sash.

What we need to check

  • How the sash opens and which way it moves
  • Whether the hinges and frame are in sound condition
  • A suitable position for the restrictor and its fixings
  • How the window is used for ventilation and access

Opening restriction and locking are different

A lockable handle controls operation of the handle. A restrictor controls the travel of the sash once it is open. Which arrangement is appropriate depends on the concern: preventing casual opening, limiting the opening distance, or repairing a window that no longer secures properly. These are not identical jobs.

If the handle turns but the locking points do not engage, start with window lock repairs. If the handle itself is broken or unsuitable, see window handle replacement. Adding a restrictor should not be used to disguise a failed lock or a sash that does not close correctly.

Check the sash before adding a fitting

A sash that drops, catches or feels unstable needs its existing hardware assessed. Restricting its travel does not repair worn friction stays or damaged fixings. The frame must also provide an appropriate fixing location, so the opening type and condition matter as much as the proposed device.

Explain whether you want to limit a normally working window or are trying to manage an existing fault. We can then distinguish new fitting work from hinge, handle or locking repairs. Photographs of the entire opening and the hinge side are more useful than a close-up of a device you have seen elsewhere.

Child safety without a blanket promise

Restrictors are a child-safety consideration, but a fitting does not replace supervision or make every window risk-free. The way it is used, the condition of its fixings and the surrounding room all remain important. Keep furniture that can be climbed on away from the opening and seek advice if the sash cannot be controlled safely.

The chosen arrangement must also account for the intended use of the window. Some openings have an escape or access role, so limiting movement needs to be considered alongside that role. We do not describe a general restrictor fitting as a certificate of compliance for a room or building.

Landlords, rented rooms and HMOs

For rented homes and HMOs, explain which rooms are involved and what requirement you are trying to address. A landlord's assessment may identify a need for limited opening or lockable handles, but the hardware choice still depends on each window. A list of room locations helps organise the inspection without assuming that every room needs the same fitting.

Record how occupants will use the window after fitting, including ventilation and any release arrangement. Building-specific obligations should be checked separately; this service description does not claim that one product meets every tenancy, fire-safety or licensing requirement. We quote for the suitable hardware work after inspecting the openings, with free in-person quotations and no unverified compliance promises.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is a lockable window handle the same as a restrictor?

No. A handle lock controls handle operation; a restrictor limits sash travel. The appropriate choice depends on whether the concern is opening control, opening distance or a faulty locking system.

Can a restrictor make a dropped sash safe to keep using?

It does not restore a worn hinge or damaged fixing. A dropped or unstable sash needs its underlying fault checked before an additional fitting is considered.

Does restrictor fitting certify an HMO window?

No blanket certification is offered here. The proposed hardware must be considered alongside the building's requirements, including the intended use of the opening and any escape role.
