Broken Window Handle or Hinge: A Practical Repair Guide
Handles and hinges do all the work on a window, so they are the parts that wear out first. They are also the cheapest parts to replace, provided the fault is dealt with before it damages anything else.

Is it the handle or the hinge?
A handle fault shows up in your hand. The handle spins without resistance, feels loose on its screws, snaps off at the base or turns but does not throw the locking points. The window itself still sits square in the frame.
A hinge fault shows up in the window. The sash drops at one corner, catches the frame as it closes, feels heavy to push open or leaves an uneven gap along one edge. The handle then stiffens because the locking points are being dragged out of line.
Why a worn hinge gets expensive
Once a friction stay wears, the sash drops and every other component carries the load. The locking mechanism grinds, the handle flexes and eventually the gearbox gives way. Replacing a pair of tired hinges is one of the cheapest repairs there is, and it prevents the expensive failures that follow.
