uPVC Door Repairs: Doors That Will Not Lock
A door that will not lock is not an inconvenience, it is a security problem. We repair uPVC, composite and aluminium doors across Newcastle and the North East, usually in a single visit and usually without replacing the door.
Most faults come down to a worn multipoint lock, a dropped or misaligned leaf, a failed cylinder or hinges that have loosened over time. All of those are repairable parts.

Door faults we put right
- Doors that need lifting or shouldering to lock
- Handles that spin, sag or feel spongy
- Snapped or seized multipoint lock mechanisms
- Keys that will not turn or that jam in the cylinder
- Dropped, sticking or catching door leaves
- Draughts, whistling and failed weather seals
- Damaged door glass and cracked panels
Realignment rather than replacement
uPVC and composite doors move with the seasons and with everyday use. When a door drops by a few millimetres, the locking points no longer meet their keeps, so the handle stiffens and eventually the mechanism gives way under the strain.
We diagnose the true cause before fitting parts. Adjusting hinges, resetting keeps and easing the frame often restores smooth operation, and where a gearbox or cylinder has already failed we replace it with a quality branded part carried on the van.
Security upgrades
If your door still has an older euro cylinder, it is worth upgrading to an anti snap, anti pick and anti drill cylinder that meets current standards. We can also fit high security handles, reinforced keeps and matching keyed alike cylinders so one key opens the front and back doors.
Patio, French and bifold doors
- Sliding patio doors that jump the track or run heavily
- Worn patio rollers and adjustment of running gear
- French door alignment, shootbolts and slave door repairs
- Bifold door hinge, roller and lock repairs
- Garage side doors, back doors and communal entrance doors
Questions
Frequently asked
My door will only lock if I lift the handle hard. Is that serious?
It is an early warning. The locking points are fighting the keeps, and continuing usually snaps the gearbox. Booking a realignment now is far cheaper than a full mechanism.
Can you repair a composite door, or only uPVC?
We repair uPVC, composite and aluminium doors. The locking hardware is broadly similar across all three.
Do you carry parts with you?
We carry a wide range of common cylinders, handles, hinges and mechanisms, so the majority of door repairs are finished on the first visit.
The key turns but the door still will not open. What is wrong?
That normally means the multipoint gearbox has failed inside the door, so the cylinder turns without moving the hooks and bolts. We can usually gain entry without damaging the door and replace the mechanism.
Can a dropped door be adjusted rather than replaced?
In most cases yes. uPVC and composite doors have adjustable hinges, and resetting the hinges and keeps often restores smooth locking without any new parts at all.
Are you able to repair the door on the first visit?
Usually. The van carries common cylinders, handles, hinges and mechanisms, so most door repairs are finished the same visit once the free quotation is agreed.

Misted and Failed Units
When condensation appears between the panes of a double glazed window, the sealed unit has failed. The glass looks permanently cloudy, the view is ruined and the window no longer insulates the room the way it should.

Windows that stick, drop, whistle in the wind or refuse to lock rarely need replacing. Almost every moving part of a uPVC window is a serviceable component, and replacing that component costs a small fraction of a new window.

Hinges, locks and handles are the parts that do all the work, so they are the parts that wear out. They are also the parts that keep your home secure, which is why a failed handle or seized lock should not be left.
