uPVC Door Repair Costs

By the Newcastle Window and Door Repairs team

Last updated:

Most people who ring about a uPVC door want to know one thing first: what is this going to cost? The reassuring answer is that it is almost always a lot less than a new door.

This guide gathers the price ranges we already publish for door work into one place, explains what pushes a job up or down and helps you judge when a repair stops making sense. It is guidance, not a quotation.

Why repair is usually cheaper than a new door

A uPVC door is a frame, a leaf and a set of moving parts. The frame and leaf rarely fail. What wears out are the hinges, the lock mechanism, the cylinder, the handles and the seals, and every one of those can be changed on its own.

Replacing a part means paying for that part and the time to fit it. A new door means paying for the whole door and frame, the fitting, making good around it and taking the old one away. That gap is why we always look for the repair first.

What pushes the cost up or down

Timing makes a difference too. A door that is lifted and realigned when it first starts to catch costs far less than one forced for months until its gearbox breaks. Our guide to a uPVC door that will not lock explains how that happens, and our door hinge repairs page covers putting a dropped door back in line.

  • Whether the door only needs adjusting, which uses no new parts
  • How long the multipoint mechanism is and who made it
  • Matching an older or discontinued lock system with an equivalent
  • The security grade of a replacement cylinder
  • How many faults are dealt with together
  • A planned booking compared with an out of hours call out

When replacement makes more sense

Replacement is worth considering when the frame itself is damaged or distorted, when the leaf has warped badly or when the lock system is so old that no compatible mechanism can be found. A door failing in several places at once can also tip the balance.

We will tell you honestly if we think that point has been reached. We are a repair business first, and we only suggest replacement when a repair is not possible.

How to get an accurate quote

Describe what the door is doing rather than what you think has broken. Does it catch, drop, lock only with a shove or not lock at all? Does the key turn freely? Is it worse in hot or cold weather?

Photographs of the lock edge, the hinges and the handle help us identify the hardware. They do not replace a look at the door, but they often mean we know which parts are likely to be needed. Quotations in person are free and the price is agreed before work starts. Contact us to arrange one, or read our door repairs page for more on each type of job.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is it worth repairing an old uPVC door?

Usually, yes. If the frame and leaf are sound, replacing the worn hinge, lock or seal restores the door for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Why does a multipoint lock cost more than a cylinder?

A cylinder is a single small part at the handle. A multipoint mechanism runs the height of the door with a gearbox and several locking points, so the part costs more and takes longer to fit.

Do you charge to look at the door?

No. Quotations in person are free, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

Can several faults be fixed in one visit?

Often they can be planned as one job. If a door has dropped, its seals are tired and the cylinder is stiff, we look at everything together rather than one fault at a time.

Are parts included in the price ranges?

Ranges marked fitted include the part and fitting. Realignment and adjustment need no new parts.
