Door Hinge Repairs and Realignment in Newcastle

When a door starts to scrape the frame, leave an uneven gap or need a firm shove before it locks, the hinges are usually where the trouble starts. We repair, adjust and replace hinges on uPVC and composite doors across Newcastle, bringing the door back into line so it closes and locks as it should.

This page is about doors only. If it is a window that has dropped or will not stay open, our window hinge and friction stay page covers that instead.

Signs a door hinge is failing

  • The bottom corner rubs the threshold
  • The lock edge catches the frame as it closes
  • The gap around the door is wider at the top on one side
  • The handle needs lifting harder than it used to
  • A hinge feels loose or creaks as the door swings
  • Daylight or a draught shows along the hinge side

How a hinge lets a door drop

A door is held up by its hinges alone. Every time it opens, its full weight turns on those knuckles and on the screws holding them into the frame. Over years of use the bearing surfaces wear, the fixings loosen and the leaf settles a little lower. The change is gradual, which is why many people only notice when the lock starts to fight back.

Composite doors are heavier than uPVC, so their hinges carry more load, and a door that is slammed or left to swing in the wind wears faster. Our guide to a front door that has dropped or is catching explains what to look for on your own door.

Adjust or replace: which does your door need?

Many doors only need adjusting. Most modern hinges have screws that move the leaf up and down, towards or away from the hinge side, and in or out against the seals. If the hinge is still solid and has adjustment left, resetting it can bring the door back into line without new parts. Our guide on how to adjust a uPVC door shows what each adjuster does.

Replacement is the answer when a hinge is cracked, its knuckle has worn so the leaf rocks, its adjusters have seized or run out of travel, or its fixings have torn out of the frame. The hinge is then changed for a matching pattern, so it fits the existing holes and the door looks the same as before.

Flag, butt and adjustable hinges

Most uPVC and composite doors use flag hinges, with one plate on the frame and one on the door meeting at a knuckle, and the adjusters tucked under plastic covers. Butt hinges look more traditional, with two leaves folding around a pin, and turn up on older uPVC and many timber doors. Both styles come in adjustable versions, and the hinge fitted to your door decides what can be corrected and what has to be swapped.

Matching matters. Patterns differ in size, screw positions and finish, so we identify the hinge before ordering anything. A photograph of the hinge with the door open is one of the most useful things you can send.

Why a dropped door stops the lock working

A multipoint lock throws hooks, rollers or bolts into keeps at several points along the frame. Those keeps are set for where the door sat when it was fitted. Once the leaf drops even a few millimetres, the locking points land in the wrong place and the handle has to drag them into position. That is why people find themselves lifting and pushing the door to lock it.

Left alone, the extra strain can break the gearbox inside the lock, turning an adjustment into a mechanism replacement. Our guide to a uPVC door that will not lock covers the difference. Putting the hinges right early is the cheaper path.

What happens on a hinge repair visit

We check how the door hangs, how the gaps run, how the locking points meet their keeps and the condition of each hinge. That tells us whether adjustment will hold or whether a hinge has to change. We explain what we have found and the options before any work starts.

Where adjustment is enough, the door is reset and tested. Where a hinge needs replacing, we match the pattern and fit it, ordering it in when it is not one we carry. We also check the keeps and seals, because a door that has been out of line for a while often needs those resetting too.

Door hinge repair or adjustment?

Not every door hinge repair needs new parts. If the hinges are sound but the door has drifted, a uPVC door adjustment visit resets them along with the keeps and compression. New hinges are needed when the body has cracked, the knuckle has worn, or the adjusters have run out of travel.

To tell which you have, open the door halfway and lift the handle end gently. Movement at the hinge itself suggests wear. Our front door dropped or catching guide explains other checks. Double doors are covered on French door repairs.

Hinge fixings and the frame

Sometimes the hinge is fine but its screws have pulled out of the frame, often on heavy composite doors. Re-securing the fixings into solid material lets the hinge hold its setting again. We check this on every hinge job, because a new hinge on loose fixings will drop just as quickly.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why has my door dropped?

Usually because the hinges have worn or their fixings have loosened under the weight of the door. Heavy composite doors and doors that are slammed or caught by the wind tend to drop sooner.

Can a dropped door be adjusted without new hinges?

Often. If the hinges are sound and still have adjustment left, the door can be lifted and realigned. New hinges are only needed when the old ones are cracked, worn loose or seized.

Will a new hinge fix my door not locking?

It will if the locking trouble comes from the door sitting out of line. If the gearbox or cylinder has already failed, that part needs attention too, and we check it at the same time.

Do you repair composite door hinges?

Yes. Composite doors use similar hinge styles to uPVC doors but carry more weight, so we look closely at the hinge condition and the fixings into the frame.

How long does a hinge repair take?

It depends on the door and the hinge. Adjustment is usually the shorter job, while replacement depends on matching the hinge and whether it has to be ordered. We tell you what to expect once we have seen the door.

Should all the hinges on a door be replaced together?

Where one hinge has worn, the others have carried the same load and are often close behind. We check each one and advise whether replacing the set is worthwhile.

Can a cracked door hinge be repaired?

A cracked hinge body is replaced rather than repaired, as it will keep moving under the weight of the door.

Why does my door hinge squeak?

Usually dry pivots or grit. A light lubricant helps, but a squeak combined with dropping or catching points to wear.
