uPVC Door Adjustment in Newcastle
Most uPVC doors that start to catch, drag or need a shove before the handle lifts have not broken. They have moved. Hinges settle, keeps drift and the seal compression changes with the seasons, and the door slowly falls out of line with its frame.
Our uPVC door adjustment visit puts it back. We reset the hinges, keeps and compression so the door closes cleanly and locks without force. It sits under our door repairs and hinges, locks and handles services, and it is often all a tired door needs.

Signs a door needs adjusting
- The handle needs lifting hard before it will lock
- The bottom corner scrapes the threshold
- Daylight shows along the top or the lock side
- The door bounces back off the frame when shut
- A draught or whistle comes round the edge
- The key only turns when the door is pulled in
What happens on an adjustment visit
We start by watching the door close. Where it touches the frame, where the gap opens up and how much effort the handle needs tell us which part has moved. We then check the hinge fixings, because an adjustment will not hold if the screws have pulled out of the frame.
Most uPVC door hinges have separate adjusters for height, side to side position and compression. We work through them in order, then move to the keeps on the frame so the hooks and rollers of the multipoint lock meet them squarely. The last step is the compression setting, which decides how firmly the door pulls into its seals. When we leave, the handle should lift with one hand and the key should turn without a fight.
Adjustment visit or DIY guide?
If you are comfortable with an Allen key, our guide on how to adjust a uPVC door explains the basics and is a good place to start. Many people find a quarter turn on the right hinge solves a mild catch.
Book a visit instead when the door has dropped far enough to scrape, when hinge adjusters are already at their limit, when one adjustment throws another part out, or when you are not sure which hinge type you have. It is also the safer option if the lock is already straining, because forcing a misaligned door is a common way to snap a gearbox.
When adjustment is not enough
Adjustment only works if the parts are sound. A hinge with a cracked body or worn knuckle will keep dropping however it is set, and that job belongs to door hinge repairs. A mechanism that stays stiff once the door is square points to the lock itself. We tell you which it is on the day rather than adjusting a door that will drop again a month later.
Our front door dropped or catching guide shows how to spot the difference between a door that needs resetting and one with a worn part. For wider faults on plastic doors, see uPVC door repairs. Double doors have their own alignment issues, covered on French door repairs.
Why seasons make it worse
uPVC expands in warm weather and shrinks in the cold, so a door that is perfect in October can bind in July. Composite doors with a heavy core also put more weight on the hinges than the frame was set for. A small seasonal tweak is normal. Repeated catching after every adjustment usually means a part is wearing and should be checked before it fails.
Booking an adjustment
Tell us what the door does when it closes, which corner catches and whether the key is getting harder to turn. A short video of the door closing is often more helpful than a photo. We give a free in-person quote, and the price is confirmed before any work starts. Our uPVC door repair cost guide shows the existing range for realignment. To book, request a quote or call us.
Questions
Frequently asked
How long does a uPVC door adjustment take?
A straightforward reset of hinges, keeps and compression is a short job. It takes longer if hinge fixings need re-securing first, and we tell you before starting if that is the case.
Will adjusting my door stop the draught?
Often, yes. Setting the compression correctly pulls the door evenly into its seals. If the seal itself has flattened or split, it may also need renewing.
Can every uPVC door be adjusted?
Most modern uPVC and composite doors have adjustable hinges and keeps. Some older doors use fixed hinges, and those may need a replacement hinge rather than a simple adjustment.
How often should a uPVC door need adjusting?
A small tweak now and then is normal as the door settles. If it needs resetting every few weeks, a hinge or keep is probably worn and should be looked at.
