uPVC Door Lock Stuck? What to Do When the Door Won't Open

By the Newcastle Window and Door Repairs team

Last updated:

A uPVC door that will not open is stressful, especially if it is the only way in or out. The handle might move but nothing happens, the key might refuse to turn, or the whole door might feel jammed solid against the frame.

The good news is that a stuck uPVC door lock usually has one of a handful of causes, and a few careful checks can tell you which. This guide explains what to try, what to avoid and when it is time to call for help.

If the checks below do not free the door, we can open it and replace the failed part.

First, work out what is stuck

Before trying anything, notice exactly what the door does. Each symptom points somewhere different, and that saves time and avoids damage.

  • Key will not turn at all: usually the cylinder or the key itself
  • Key turns but the handle will not go down: the mechanism may be jammed
  • Handle moves freely but the door stays shut: often a broken gearbox
  • Everything moves but the door is tight: usually alignment or pressure on the locking points

Take the pressure off the locking points

Many doors that seem locked solid are simply being squeezed. When a door drops or swells, its hooks and rollers press hard against the keeps, and the mechanism cannot pull them back. Try pushing the door firmly towards the frame, or lifting it slightly at the handle side, while turning the key and pressing the handle down.

Try both directions: push in, then pull gently towards you. If the door releases in one position, the cause is alignment. Once it is open, do not just carry on using it. A door that binds like this will snap its gearbox sooner or later, and resetting it through a uPVC door adjustment is far cheaper than a new mechanism.

Check the key and cylinder

If the key will not turn, check it is the right key and that it is not bent or worn. A spare key often works when a well used one does not. A little dry lubricant in the keyway can free a stiff cylinder; avoid thick oil, which collects dirt.

If the key turns partway and stops, the cam on the cylinder may be catching. Turning the key while gently moving the handle up and down can help it find its position. Do not force the key, as that is how keys snap inside the lock. If a key has already broken, leave it alone and see our Newcastle locksmith service.

uPVC door mechanism replacement

  • The handle lifts but the locking points do not engage
  • The handle has gone floppy and will not spring back
  • The key turns but the door does not lock or unlock

When the handle moves but nothing happens

A handle that turns freely with no resistance, while the door stays shut, usually means the gearbox inside the door has broken. The gears no longer connect the handle to the locking strip. At this point there is little a homeowner can safely do from inside or outside without tools.

This is the same fault that stops a door locking, just in the other position. Our guide on a uPVC door that will not lock describes the early warning signs. The fix is a new gearbox or mechanism, covered on uPVC door mechanism replacement.

What not to do

  • Do not use a crowbar or screwdriver on the door edge: it damages the frame and the seals
  • Do not hang your weight on the handle: it can snap the spindle or gearbox
  • Do not drill the cylinder yourself: it often leaves the mechanism still locked
  • Do not spray thick oil into the lock: it attracts grit and makes things worse

When to call

Call once the gentle checks have not worked, the handle is limp, a key has snapped or the door is your only exit. Getting a jammed door open without damage takes the right approach, and once it is open the failed part can be replaced. If the property is left insecure, our 24 hour emergency call out is there for that; standard hours are 8am to 5pm.

When you get in touch, tell us what the key and handle do, whether the door has been catching recently and whether you are inside or outside. That helps us work out the likely cause before we arrive. If the door is open but cannot be locked, see emergency repairs.

Stopping it happening again

Most stuck doors have warned their owners for weeks: a handle that needs lifting harder, a key that needs jiggling, a door that has to be pulled in to lock. Dealing with those signs early, with an adjustment or a new hinge, protects the mechanism. A light clean and lubrication of the locking points once or twice a year also helps; our door maintenance guide explains how.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do I open a uPVC door when the lock is stuck?

Push the door firmly towards the frame, or lift it at the handle side, while turning the key and pressing the handle. If that does not release it, stop and call rather than forcing it.

Why is my uPVC door stuck shut after cold weather?

Changes in temperature make uPVC move, which can press the locking points tight against the keeps. Taking the pressure off by pushing or lifting the door often frees it.

Will opening a jammed uPVC door damage it?

It depends on the cause. A door that is only binding opens without damage. One with a broken gearbox needs careful work, and some parts are replaced once it is open.

Can I use WD-40 on a stuck uPVC door lock?

A small amount of a light lubricant can free a stiff cylinder, but it will not fix a broken gearbox. Avoid heavy oil, which gathers dirt inside the lock.
