Bifold Door Repairs in Newcastle for Sticking and Dropped Panels

Bifold doors depend on every panel staying in line. When one roller wears or one hinge drops by a few millimetres, the whole set starts to drag, catch at the fold or refuse to lock at the end post.

We repair aluminium and uPVC bifold doors in homes and business premises, working through the running gear, hinges and locking rather than forcing the panels or recommending a new set.

Signs your bifold needs attention

  • Panels drag, grind or jump along the track
  • The doors have to be lifted to fold or close
  • A gap appears at the top or bottom when closed
  • The master door will not lock or the handle is stiff
  • Water or draughts at the threshold
  • Grit, corrosion or damage in the bottom track

Rollers and tracks

Most bifold systems hang from or run on rollers at the head or threshold. Grit in the track and worn wheels are the most common cause of a door that feels heavy. We clean the track, check it is straight and undamaged, and replace worn rollers so the panels glide again.

A bent or damaged track is assessed in place. Where a section cannot be straightened we explain the options before any work is ordered.

Hinges and panel alignment

Each pair of panels is joined by hinges that carry weight as the doors fold. As they wear, the panels sag and the gaps around the frame become uneven. We adjust or replace the hinges and reset each panel so the reveals are even and the set folds as one.

Alignment matters for the locks too. A master door that has dropped will not meet its keeps, so the handle has to be forced and the mechanism wears out early.

Locks, handles and seals

We repair and replace multipoint mechanisms, handles, shoot bolts and cylinders on bifold master doors, and renew gaskets and brush seals where wind and rain are getting past the panels.

Misted glass in a bifold panel is a sealed unit fault, and we replace the unit in the existing panel in the same way as a window.

Watch where the folding sequence goes wrong

A bifold is not just one door sliding across an opening. Its panels have to travel and fold together, so the point at which movement becomes awkward is useful information. A set that grinds along the track raises a different question from panels that catch as they fold. If you have to lift the doors to move them, tell us which panel needs lifting and whether the trouble happens when opening, closing or both.

The master door deserves attention separately from the folding panels. It may be difficult to lock even when the rest of the set still moves. Uneven gaps around the closed panels can point towards alignment, while grit or visible track damage points towards the running surface. These symptoms guide the inspection; they do not mean that every hinge, roller and lock needs replacing.

Why running gear and locking need to be considered together

A worn roller is a running problem, but the effect can reach the rest of the set. Panels that no longer sit correctly may leave the master door out of line with its keeps. Forcing the handle does not put the panels back in position. We work through the track, rollers and hinges so a locking problem is not treated as proof that the lock itself has failed.

Cleaning a track, replacing a worn roller and adjusting a hinge are separate repairs. A damaged rail also needs assessment rather than simply fitting wheels onto it and hoping for the best. Once the panel positions have been considered, the multipoint mechanism, shoot bolts, handles and cylinder can be checked as the locking parts they are. The repair should follow the fault, not a list of parts changed regardless of condition.

Separate panel problems from glass and seal problems

Cloudy glass inside one bifold panel does not, on its own, identify a fault in the folding gear. The failed sealed unit can be replaced within that panel while the frame remains. Likewise, a draught or water at the threshold needs attention to the gaskets and brush seals as well as consideration of how the panels sit when closed. It is useful to tell us both how the set moves and what you notice once it is shut.

Our repair-first approach applies to the complete set: retain the panels and frame where the existing parts can be repaired or replaced appropriately. Aluminium and uPVC bifolds in homes and business premises are covered. When describing the problem, mention the material, whether the master door locks, and whether the fault involves movement, weather seals or misted glass. That keeps the enquiry focused on the work the doors actually need.

Bifold door adjustment

Bifold doors rely on several panels hanging in perfect line. When one drops, the rest follow it out of true, the doors stick as they fold and the locks stop meeting their keeps. Bifold door adjustment resets the running gear and hinges so each panel hangs at the right height and the set folds smoothly again.

We check the top or bottom track, the carriers, the hinges between panels and the lock points. Where a hinge has worn, rather than simply moved, the approach is similar to our door hinge repairs. Many bifolds are aluminium, and those frames are also covered by aluminium window and door repairs.

Emergency bifold door repair

If a bifold panel has come off its track or the doors cannot be locked, the back of the house may be left open. Our 24 hour emergency call out covers properties that cannot be secured; see emergency repairs.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why are my bifold doors hard to open?

Usually worn rollers or debris in the track. Cleaning the track and replacing the rollers normally restores a smooth run.

Can you fix a bifold that has dropped?

Yes. We adjust or replace the hinges and running gear to lift the panels back into line, which also helps the locks engage.

Do you repair aluminium bifold doors?

Yes. We work on aluminium and uPVC bifolds, in homes and commercial premises.

My bifold master door will not lock. What is wrong?

Either the door has dropped so the locking points miss their keeps, or the mechanism itself has worn. We check alignment first, because that is often the real cause.

Can misted glass in a bifold be replaced on its own?

Yes. The failed sealed unit is replaced in the existing panel and the frame and running gear stay put.

How often do bifold doors need adjusting?

Panels can settle over time, especially in the first year after fitting. If they start to stick or the locks become stiff, an adjustment is usually due.

Can you repair aluminium bifold doors?

Yes. We repair aluminium bifold doors as well as uPVC ones, including running gear, hinges, locks and glass.

Why is my bifold door hard to fold?

A dropped panel, worn carriers or debris in the track are the usual causes. Cleaning the track and resetting the panels often frees the doors.
