Sliding Patio Door Problems and How They Are Fixed
Sliding patio doors carry a lot of weight on a small number of rollers, so wear shows up as a door that gets heavier and heavier until one day it will not lock at all.
Almost all of it is repairable. Rollers, tracks, locks and adjustment are serviceable parts, and the door and glass usually stay exactly where they are.

What each symptom points to
- Heavy or dragging slide: worn or collapsed rollers, or debris packed in the track
- Grinding or squealing: flat spots on the rollers and a dry or damaged track
- Door jumps or derails: rollers set too low, or a bent and worn track
- Will not lock or the hook misses the keep: the door has dropped out of alignment
- Draught and rattle along the closing edge: perished brush seals and interlock gaskets
- Water on the inside floor: blocked track drainage rather than a failed seal
Rollers and adjustment
Most patio doors have adjustable rollers reached through small caps at the bottom of the sliding leaf. Once the rollers are worn, adjustment alone cannot save them, and new running gear plus a proper reset transforms how the door feels.
Getting the height right also brings the locking hook back in line with its keep, which is why a door that would not lock often locks perfectly once the rollers are sorted.
Locks and security on patio doors
Older patio doors can be a weak point. We fit better quality locks and anti lift devices where needed, replace worn shootbolts and keeps and can change cylinders on doors that take a key.
Keeping it right afterwards
- Vacuum the track regularly so grit does not chew the new rollers
- Keep the track drainage holes clear of debris
- Use a dry silicone lubricant rather than oil, which collects dirt
- Lift by the handle rather than pushing the glass

Why has my patio door become so heavy to slide?
