Window Lock Repair in Newcastle

A window that will not lock is a security problem and a draught problem at the same time. On most modern windows the fault lies in the locking mechanism hidden in the edge of the sash rather than in the frame or the glass.

We carry out window lock repair and window lock replacement across Newcastle and the North East, without replacing the window. This page covers the locking gear itself; for the handle on the outside see window handle replacement, and for the full range of hardware see hinges, locks and handles.

Window lock faults we deal with

  • The handle turns but the window will not lock
  • The handle will not turn at all
  • The window locks only if you push the sash hard
  • Locking cams no longer meet the keeps
  • A window lock key is lost or the barrel is seized
  • The mechanism has snapped inside the sash

How a uPVC window lock works

Most uPVC casements use an espagnolette mechanism: a metal bar running along the opening edge of the sash, driven by a gearbox behind the handle. Turning the handle slides the bar, which moves mushroom cams or rollers into keeps fixed to the frame. Several locking points along the edge hold the sash tight against its seals.

Because one gearbox drives every locking point, a single worn part stops the whole window locking. The good news is that the mechanism can be replaced as a part, leaving the window, glass and frame untouched.

Why the handle turns but the window does not lock

When the handle moves freely and nothing else does, the spindle has usually snapped or the gearbox has stripped. When the handle is stiff and only locks with force, the sash is often out of line so the cams drag on the keeps. That second fault is commonly caused by tired hinges, which we repair under window hinge repairs. Forcing a stiff handle eventually breaks the gearbox, so it is worth having it looked at early.

Our guide to a window that will not open or close explains how to spot which part is at fault before you call.

Window mechanism repair and replacement

We remove the sash hardware, identify the mechanism by its backset and length, and fit a matching replacement. Keeps are adjusted or renewed so the cams engage cleanly, and the window is tested from both sides. Where a window is stuck locked, we open it without damaging the frame before replacing the failed gear.

Older windows sometimes use single point locks or separate key locks fitted to the frame. Those can be replaced or added where the frame allows, which is also how window lock installation is done on windows that never had a lock.

Lost window lock keys

Locking handles and some older bolt locks need a small key. If it is lost, the lock can often be replaced with one that comes with new keys, rather than the window being forced. Tell us the make if it is marked on the handle, or send a photo.

What to tell us

Let us know how many windows are affected, whether the handle turns, and whether the window is currently stuck open or shut. A stuck open ground floor window may be treated as urgent. Request a quote with photos of the handle and the edge of the sash and we will arrange to inspect it.

Questions

Frequently asked

How do you fix a window that won't lock?

We find out whether the handle, spindle, gearbox or alignment is at fault. A misaligned sash is adjusted, while a broken gearbox or espagnolette bar is replaced as a matching part.

Can window locks be replaced without replacing the window?

Yes. The locking mechanism is a separate part inside the edge of the sash. It comes out and a new one goes in, leaving the frame, glass and seals as they are.

How much to replace window locks?

It depends on the mechanism type, whether keeps or handles also need replacing and how many windows are involved. The window repair costs guide shows the existing price ranges, and we confirm the price after inspecting.

Why does my window handle turn but not lock?

Usually the square spindle has broken or the gearbox has stripped, so turning the handle no longer moves the locking bar. Fitting a new handle alone will not fix that.
