Double Glazing Unit Replacement in Newcastle

A sealed unit is the double or triple glazed panel that sits inside your window or door frame. When one is cracked, smashed or its seal has given way, the unit can be replaced on its own while the frame stays exactly where it is. We do this across Newcastle and the North East on uPVC, timber and aluminium frames.

If your glass has gone cloudy between the panes, our misted double glazing page explains that particular fault in detail. This page covers the wider job of replacing a damaged or failed unit.

When a sealed unit needs replacing

  • A pane cracked by an impact or by stress at a corner
  • Glass smashed in an accident or a break-in
  • An edge seal that has failed and let moisture in
  • A spacer bar that is bent, damaged or lifting
  • Ordinary glass in a spot that needs toughened glass
  • A damaged obscure or patterned unit in a bathroom or door

What a sealed unit is

Two or three panes of glass are held apart by a spacer bar around the edge and sealed together, with the gap between them dried so it cannot fog. The finished unit sits in the frame behind beads and gaskets. It is a self contained part, which is why it can be lifted out and a new one fitted without disturbing the window or door around it.

Units fail in a few ways. Glass cracks from an impact or from stress in a corner. The edge seal can perish with age and let damp air in. A spacer can be damaged when a unit is forced or was poorly packed. In each case the answer is a new unit made to the size of the opening.

Replacing the glass, not the window

Most frames are perfectly sound when a unit fails. The beads are removed, the old unit comes out, the new one goes in on the correct packers and the beads go back. Hinges, locks, handles and the frame itself are left alone, so the window or door works and looks just as it did.

This is the repair first approach in practice. A new unit costs far less than a new window, involves no disturbance to plaster or sills and keeps the frames you already chose.

Measuring and ordering the right unit

Every unit is made to measure. We measure the opening, check the overall thickness the frame takes and note the glass needed. That covers single, double and triple glazing, clear, obscure or patterned glass, and toughened safety glass where the position calls for it, such as in doors, low panes and panels beside doors.

Matching the existing look matters too. Spacer colour, Georgian bars and patterned glass can be specified so the new unit sits comfortably alongside the others.

Making safe while a new unit is made

Because units are made to order, a broken pane cannot always be replaced straight away. Where the glass is smashed and the property is not secure, we make it safe first by removing loose glass and boarding the opening, then return to fit the new unit. Our emergency repairs service handles that, and our guide to boarding up after a break-in explains what to do in the meantime.

What affects the cost

Size, glass type and access all play a part. A standard double glazed unit in a ground floor window is a different job from a large toughened unit high up or in a bay. Our guide to the cost to replace a double glazed unit sets out our own price ranges and what moves them. We confirm the price after measuring, and quotations in person are free.

Doors, conservatories and larger units

Door glass is replaced the same way, using toughened units sized to the door panel. Conservatory side and roof units can also be changed one at a time, and our guide to misted conservatory roof panels covers the extra points to consider with roof glass and access. Large picture windows and bays are handled with the same care, with enough hands for the weight of the glass.

To arrange a visit, contact us or call. Tell us roughly where the unit is, how big it is and what has happened to it, and send a photograph if you can.

Replacing failed double glazing in the frame you already have

A double glazing unit can fail in two ways: the glass breaks, or the seal gives up and the unit mists. Both are fixed the same way, by making a new unit to size and fitting it in place of the old one. If misting is your only symptom, see our misted double glazing page; for single panes and safety glass, see window glass replacement.

Double glazing unit repair is a term people often use, but a unit itself cannot be resealed reliably once it has failed. Replacement is the lasting fix. Our cost to replace a double glazed unit guide sets out the existing price ranges.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can you replace just the glass and keep my frame?

Yes. That is the usual approach. The damaged unit comes out from behind its beads and a new made to measure unit is fitted in the existing frame.

What is the difference between a sealed unit and a misted unit repair?

A misted unit is one particular way a sealed unit fails, when moisture gets between the panes. Sealed unit replacement also covers cracked and broken glass and damaged spacers. The fix in every case is a new unit.

Can you board up a broken window while the new unit is made?

Yes. Where the glass is broken and the property is not secure, we can make the opening safe and board it, then come back to fit the new unit.

Do you replace glass in uPVC doors?

Yes. Door units are replaced with toughened glass made to fit the panel, and the door and its locks stay as they are.

Can a triple glazed unit be replaced?

Yes. Triple glazed units are measured and made to order in the same way as double glazed ones, to match the thickness the frame was built for.

Is broken double glazing dangerous to leave?

A cracked inner or outer pane may still hold together, but it can spread and lose its insulating value. If any glass is loose or the window is insecure, the opening should be made safe straight away.

How do I measure a failed double glazing unit?

You do not need to. We measure the opening and the unit thickness on site, because the order has to match the rebate exactly.

Can one unit be replaced in a window with several panes?

Yes. Each unit is separate, so only the failed one is replaced and the others are left in place.
