Patio Door Repairs in Newcastle for Sticking and Unlocked Sliders

A sliding patio door is a heavy pane of glass on a pair of small wheels. When those wheels flatten, seize or come off the rail, the door grinds, sticks halfway or lifts off the track entirely, and the lock stops lining up with its keep.

We repair sliding patio doors in uPVC, aluminium and timber. Most jobs are rollers, locks, handles and adjustment, carried out with the door kept in its existing frame.

Patio door faults we repair

  • The door is heavy, grinding or sticks part way
  • The sliding leaf has come off its track
  • The lock will not catch or the handle spins
  • The door will not lock without lifting or pushing
  • Draughts or water at the bottom of the door
  • Misted glass in the sliding or fixed panel

Rollers: the usual culprit

Patio door rollers sit in the bottom of the sliding leaf and carry its whole weight. Over time the wheels wear flat or the bearings seize, and the door starts to drag on the track. Lifting the leaf out and fitting new rollers is the standard repair.

Once new rollers are in, we set their height so the leaf runs level and the lock lines up with the keep on the frame.

If your garden doors swing open as a pair rather than slide along a rail, French door repairs covers their hinges, meeting edges and slave leaf shootbolts.

Patio doors that will not lock

If the lock will not engage, the door has usually dropped on worn rollers so the hooks miss the keep. Raising the rollers often solves it outright. Where the mechanism itself has failed, or the handle spins without moving the hooks, we replace the lock case or handle with a matching part.

We can also fit anti lift blocks and upgraded cylinders where a door feels less secure than it should.

Tracks, seals and glass

A dented or worn track is checked before new rollers are fitted, because a damaged rail will wear the new wheels quickly. Brush seals and gaskets along the leaf are renewed where wind and water are getting through.

Misted units in either panel are replaced in the existing frame, in the same way as a misted window.

Homes and business premises

We repair patio and sliding doors for homeowners, landlords and commercial premises across the North East, and we offer a 24 hour emergency call out where a door cannot be secured.

Heavy sliding is not the same fault as a failed lock

A patio door that feels heavy can still have a working lock, and a door that slides easily can still have a broken handle. Start by separating those symptoms. Does the leaf grind throughout its travel, stop part way, or move normally until it reaches the frame? Does the handle turn without moving the hooks, or do the hooks move but fail to catch? Those descriptions help distinguish the sliding gear from the locking hardware.

When the door has to be lifted or pushed to lock, worn rollers and the height of the leaf need consideration. The lock and its keep depend on meeting at the right position. Changing a lock without addressing a dropped sliding leaf would leave that alignment issue unresolved. The condition of the wheels and track therefore matters to more than how easily you can open the door.

What is retained during a roller or lock replacement

Roller replacement involves lifting out the sliding leaf to reach the wheels underneath. The work is focused on those components, not on replacing the surrounding frame. Their height is then set so the leaf runs level and the lock meets its keep. A track that is dented or worn is checked before new rollers are fitted, because the surface they run on also affects the repair.

If the locking mechanism has failed, the lock case or handle can be replaced with a matching part. That decision is separate from adjustment of the rollers. Anti lift blocks and upgraded cylinders are also existing options where security needs attention. We explain which component is causing the problem rather than treating a stiff slider, a spinning handle and a damaged track as the same job.

Include the fixed panel and weather seals in your enquiry

The fixed panel may not move, but its glass can still become misted. Failed sealed units in either the sliding or fixed panel can be replaced in the existing frame. This is different from roller work, and it helps to say which pane is affected. Draughts or water at the bottom of the door are another separate symptom, with brush seals and gaskets considered where wind and rain are passing the leaf.

We repair timber, aluminium and uPVC sliding patio doors for homeowners, landlords and commercial premises across the North East. If the property cannot be secured, the existing 24 hour emergency call out applies. Otherwise, describe the movement, locking and glazing symptoms together so the repair enquiry covers the whole problem. A replacement door is not the starting assumption simply because the sliding leaf has become awkward to use.

A sliding patio door repair service for every part

A patio door repair company should look at the whole door, because the parts affect each other. A heavy door is usually a roller job, covered by patio door roller replacement. A door that will not lock may need patio door lock replacement, or may only need its rollers set to the right height. Cracked or misted panes are handled under door glass replacement.

For sliding door repairs in Newcastle, we inspect the track, the rollers, the lock and the glass on the same visit. If the door is left insecure after damage, emergency patio door repair falls under our emergency repairs service. Patio doors sit within our wider door repairs.

Patio door window repair and seals

The fixed pane of a patio door is effectively a large window. When it mists or cracks, the unit is replaced in the existing frame. Worn brush seals along the meeting edge cause rattles and draughts and can be renewed without touching the glass.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why won't my patio door lock?

Most often the door has dropped on worn rollers so the lock no longer meets its keep. Adjusting or replacing the rollers usually fixes it; otherwise the lock itself is replaced.

Can you put a patio door back on its track?

Yes. We lift the leaf, check the rollers and track, and refit it so it runs level and locks properly.

Do you replace patio door rollers?

Yes. Roller replacement is the most common patio door repair we do, on uPVC, aluminium and timber sliders.

Is a patio door that won't lock an emergency?

If the property cannot be secured, yes. We offer a 24 hour emergency call out for insecure doors.

How much does it cost to repair a patio door?

It depends on the part. Our patio door guide lists existing ranges, for example around £120 to £250 for roller replacement and realignment and around £90 to £190 fitted for a lock or shootbolt repair. We confirm the price at a free in-person quote.

How much is sliding door repair compared with a new door?

Repairing rollers, locks or seals usually costs a fraction of a replacement. We look at what has failed first and only discuss replacing the door if it cannot be repaired.

How much is a replacement sliding door?

We are a repair first business, so we price replacements individually only where a repair is genuinely not possible. Size, material and glass specification all affect the cost.

Why does my patio door rattle in the wind?

Usually the brush seals along the meeting edge have flattened, or the leaf has dropped slightly. Both can be corrected without replacing the door.
