Why a patio door won't lock

  • The handle turns but the hooks do not move
  • The hooks throw but miss the keep on the frame
  • The key turns but the door stays unlocked
  • The door only locks when pushed hard to one side
  • The handle has snapped or come loose
  • The lock has been forced in an attempted break in

How a sliding patio door locks

Most sliding patio doors lock with hook bolts that swing out of the edge of the sliding leaf and grip a keep on the frame. The handle drives a gearbox inside the leaf, and a cylinder lets you lock it with a key. Some doors also have extra locking points at the top and bottom. If any part of that chain fails or falls out of line, the door will not lock.

Locks or rollers?

A surprising number of patio doors that will not lock have perfectly good locks. When the rollers wear, the leaf sinks, the hooks sit too low and they miss the keep. Replacing the lock on a door like that does nothing. We always check the height of the leaf first, and if the rollers are the cause, the job is patio door roller replacement instead.

Keeps can also work loose or get bent. Resetting a keep is a small job and often fixes a door that seemed to need a new lock.

Replacing the patio door lock

When the gearbox or hooks have genuinely failed, we replace the lock mechanism inside the leaf. Patio lock mechanisms come in different lengths and backset sizes, so we measure the existing one and match it. The cylinder can be replaced at the same time, and a higher security cylinder is worth considering; see anti snap locks.

Front and back door locks are a different mechanism and are covered on uPVC door lock replacement.

If the door is stuck open or shut

A patio door that will not lock at night, or one locked and refusing to open, needs attention quickly. If the property cannot be secured, call about our 24 hour emergency repairs. Otherwise, avoid forcing the handle, because that can break a gearbox that was only binding.

Cost and booking

The existing range for a patio lock or shootbolt repair in our patio door guide is around £90 to £190 fitted, which includes resetting the keeps and hook alignment. The final price depends on the lock type and whether other parts need attention, and it is confirmed at a free in-person quote. A photo of the lock edge of the door helps us identify it. Questions

Frequently asked

Why won't my patio door lock even though the handle moves?

Usually either the gearbox inside the leaf has failed or the hooks are missing the keep because the door has dropped. We check both before anything is replaced.

Can a patio door lock be replaced without a new door?

Yes. The lock mechanism sits inside the edge of the sliding leaf and can be removed and replaced, keeping the door and glass.

Can I add extra security to a patio door?

A higher security cylinder can be fitted when the lock is replaced, and the keeps can be checked and secured so the hooks grip properly.

My patio door locks only if I push it. What is wrong?

The hooks and keep are out of line. That is often caused by worn rollers or a loose keep, and both can usually be corrected.
