Conservatory Roof Panel Replacement in Newcastle

A conservatory roof is made of individual panels sitting between glazing bars. When one cracks, mists, yellows or starts to let water in, that panel can usually be taken out and replaced on its own, leaving the frame, the walls and the rest of the roof untouched.

We carry out conservatory roof panel replacement on glass and polycarbonate roofs across Newcastle and the North East. It sits under our conservatory roof repairs and double glazing repairs services.

Panels worth replacing

  • Glass roof units misted between the panes
  • Cracked or impact damaged glass panels
  • Polycarbonate sheets gone yellow, brittle or green inside
  • Panels that have slipped down the glazing bars
  • Sheets split along the flutes after frost
  • Panels letting water in at the edges

Glass and polycarbonate roofs

Glass roof panels are sealed units, similar to those in a window but made with toughened or laminated glass for overhead use. When the seal fails they mist up in the same way, and the fix is a new unit made to the same size and specification. Our sealed unit replacement page explains how those units are built.

Polycarbonate roofs use multiwall plastic sheets with hollow channels running down the slope. Over time the surface weathers, the sheets discolour and dirt or algae gets into the channels. Once that happens cleaning will not bring them back, and the sheet is replaced. Polycarbonate roof panel replacement is usually done sheet by sheet, so a few bad panels do not mean a whole new roof.

How a roof panel is replaced

We remove the top cappings or glazing bar covers over the panel, lift out the old panel and clean the bar seals. The new panel is set in place with the right end closures and tape where needed, then the cappings go back on and are sealed. Working on a conservatory roof needs proper access and care, as the bars are not built to be stood on.

While the cappings are off we check the gaskets and seals on the neighbouring bars, because tired seals are a common reason water gets in around a panel that looks fine.

Conservatory glass replacement in the side frames

Conservatory glass replacement is not only about the roof. The side frames are glazed with sealed units like any window, and misted or broken side units are replaced in the existing frame. For broken panes, see window glass replacement.

Is the panel the problem?

Not every leak comes from a panel. Gutters, flashings against the house wall and cappings are just as often the cause. If water is getting in and you are not sure where from, our leaking conservatory roof guide explains the checks, and the misted conservatory roof panels guide covers fogged glass units.

Cost and booking

Our existing cost guides list a conservatory roof panel as quoted individually, because size, glass or sheet type and access vary so much. Upgrading to solar control or self cleaning glass adds to the panel price. Count how many panels are affected, and send a photo from inside and one from outside if you can. We confirm the price at a free in-person quote. To book, request a quote or call us.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can one conservatory roof panel be replaced on its own?

Yes. Each panel sits between glazing bars and can be removed and replaced individually, keeping the rest of the roof.

Can I swap polycarbonate roof panels for glass?

Sometimes, but glass is heavier and the roof structure must be able to carry it. We check the bars and frame before suggesting it.

Why have my polycarbonate panels turned green inside?

Moisture and dirt have got into the hollow channels and algae has grown. Once inside it cannot be cleaned out, so the sheet is replaced.

Will a new roof panel match the old ones?

We match the thickness and type, and glass tints where available. Polycarbonate that has weathered may look slightly different from new sheets at first.
