Window Handle Replacement in Newcastle
A window handle takes a twist every time the sash is opened, so it is often the first part to work loose, crack or lose its spring. When it goes, the window can be stuck shut, stuck open or impossible to lock.
We carry out window handle replacement on uPVC, timber and aluminium casements across Newcastle and the North East. Handles sit within our wider hinges, locks and handles repairs, which form part of our window repairs service.

Signs the handle needs replacing
- The handle spins without moving the locking gear
- It has snapped at the neck or the base
- The handle wobbles because the fixings have pulled
- A locking handle key is lost or the barrel has seized
- The lever no longer springs back to its position
- An old or discoloured handle no longer matches the rest
Can you replace window handles on your own windows?
In most cases, yes. A uPVC window handle is held by two screws hidden under a cover plate, and a square spindle passes from the handle into the gearbox inside the sash. Replacing the handle itself is straightforward once the right one is chosen. The skill lies in choosing it, and in checking that the handle really is the failed part.
A handle that turns freely but leaves the window locked usually points to a broken spindle or a gearbox that has given up. Fitting a new handle to a failed gearbox achieves nothing, so we test the mechanism before anything is ordered. If the locking gear is at fault, that work is covered on our window lock repairs page.
Spindle length, offset and handle type
Window handles are not one size. Spindle length varies with the depth of the sash, and a spindle that is too short slips out of the gearbox while one that is too long stops the handle sitting flat. The offset, meaning the distance from the screw holes to the spindle, also changes between makes. Cockspur handles used on older single point windows work in a completely different way from the espagnolette handles fitted to most modern uPVC casements.
Our broken window handle or hinge guide shows how to tell the common faults apart. If you send a photo of the handle and the cover plate removed, we can usually tell which family it belongs to before the visit.
Locking window handles and old windows
Locking handles add a small key barrel so the lever cannot be turned from inside without the key. They are popular on ground floor windows and on rooms where children play. Many older windows can take a locking handle as a straight swap, provided the spindle and fixing positions suit. Remember that a locked handle can slow your exit in a fire, so keep keys close to bedroom windows.
Old window handle replacement is mostly about matching. Where the original style is no longer made, we fit a close equivalent in white, brown, chrome or another finish so the window does not stand out from its neighbours.
Vent, tilt and roof window handles
Small vent windows and fanlights often use a different handle from the main sash, and tilt and turn windows use a handle that controls two opening modes. Roof windows also have their own handle designs. We look at each of these on site and advise whether a matching handle is available or whether the gear behind it also needs attention.
What affects the cost
The price depends on the handle type, finish, whether it locks, how many windows need doing and whether the gearbox or spindle also needs replacing. A single matching handle is a small job; a seized mechanism behind it is a larger one. Our window repair costs guide sets out the approved price ranges for hardware work, and we confirm the actual price after seeing the window.

Questions
Frequently asked
Can you replace window handles on any uPVC window?
Nearly all uPVC casements can take a replacement handle. We check the spindle length, the screw offset and whether the window uses an espagnolette or older cockspur system, then fit a handle that suits that mechanism.
How do I know which spindle length or handle type I need?
Remove the cover plate under the handle and photograph it along with the side of the sash. That shows the screw spacing and handle family. We confirm the spindle length on site, because a few millimetres make the difference between a firm handle and one that slips.
Can locking handles be fitted to old windows?
Often they can, as long as the existing fixings and spindle suit a locking version. Where they do not, we explain what would be needed so you can decide before any work is done.
What does it cost to replace a uPVC window handle?
It depends on the handle style, finish, whether it is a locking type and whether the gearbox behind it has also failed. See our window repair costs guide for the existing price ranges; we confirm the price at the free in-person quote.
