Letterbox Replacement uPVC Door Service
A broken letterbox flap can leave a gap in an otherwise sound entrance door. A loose surround, tired draught flap or damaged cowl needs a fitting matched to the existing opening, not an automatic replacement of the door panel or the whole door.
Letterbox replacement for uPVC and composite doors sits within our uPVC door repairs and door repairs. We assess the opening and the fitting arrangement before selecting a replacement. This page describes that work generally, without claiming particular past installations or a universal size.

Letterbox faults to show us
- An outer flap that stays open or has broken away
- Air entering through the letterbox rather than the door edge
- A loose surround or damaged internal cowl
- A fitting that no longer sits securely in its opening
Draught flaps, brushes and cowls
The outer flap closes the opening on the weather side. The inner flap, brush arrangement or cowl helps manage the opening on the room side. A broken flap or badly fitting surround can allow draughts through even when the door's perimeter seals are doing their job.
A replacement needs to suit the door and allow post to pass without leaving the flap permanently held open. Draught-proofing features are considered as part of that choice, rather than as a promise that the entire entrance will become draught-free. If air is also coming around the leaf, our draughty uPVC door guide explains how to separate those gaps.
Measure the opening, not just the visible plate
The size of the faceplate is not the same as the cut-out behind it. Door thickness, fixing positions and clearance for the internal part also affect compatibility. Two letterboxes that look similar from the street can need different fitting arrangements once those details are considered.
Send photographs of both sides of the letterbox and the whole door, with any existing measurements you can obtain safely. Do not enlarge the opening or remove the fitting simply to guess a size. The aim is to find a suitable replacement for the existing arrangement while keeping sound surrounding material intact.
uPVC panels and composite door leaves
In a uPVC entrance the letterbox may sit within an infill panel. In a composite door it is part of the leaf's existing construction. The condition of that surrounding material matters: replacing the flap alone will not restore a cracked panel or a fixing area that can no longer hold the fitting securely.
Where a uPVC panel is damaged, uPVC door panel replacement is a separate option to discuss. That is not the starting assumption for a worn letterbox. We distinguish the condition of the fitting from the condition of the door so that the proposed repair is proportionate to what has actually failed.
What to include when arranging a quotation
Tell us whether the problem is an open flap, draught, loose fixing or difficulty receiving post. Mention if the internal cowl catches the mail or if a part has broken off. These details help identify which element is at fault instead of treating every complaint as a problem with the door seals.
A free in-person quotation checks the dimensions and suitable fitting before work is agreed. There is no fixed letterbox price on this page because the required size and arrangement vary. We retain the sound door where replacement of the fitting is appropriate. If the leaf also catches or the lock has become stiff, describe that separately so it can be assessed as its own repair.
Questions
Frequently asked
Why can I feel cold air through a letterbox on a closed door?
A broken flap, worn draught feature or poor fit can leave a path through the letterbox opening. That is different from a gap around the door's perimeter and needs its own check.
Can I choose a replacement by measuring its front plate?
The plate alone is not enough. The cut-out, door thickness, fixings and internal clearance also need to match, so the existing opening must be assessed.
Will a worn letterbox always mean a new uPVC door panel?
No. A suitable fitting can be considered in a sound existing panel. Panel replacement is a separate discussion where the material around the opening is damaged or unsuitable.
