Draught from uPVC Door: Find the Gap Before the Fix

By the Newcastle Window and Door Repairs team

Last updated:

A draught from a uPVC door can come through the meeting edge, the hinge side, the bottom of the leaf or the letterbox. Knowing where the air enters matters more than adding extra sealing material everywhere. A leaf that does not meet the frame properly and a split gasket are different repairs.

This guide focuses on an entrance door, including its threshold, hinges, locking pressure and postal opening. It is distinct from window draught advice because a door's frequent use and multipoint locking action affect how it closes. Observe the gap without forcing the handle to pull the door tighter.

Locate the draught so alignment and seals can be assessed separately.

Find the entry point with the door shut

On a windy day, move your hand near the inside edge of the closed door to locate the air. Check the corners and letterbox as separate locations. Do not use a flame to trace it. Describe the position in relation to the handle, hinges and floor so the inspection starts with a clear symptom.

Cold glass is not itself proof of air leakage. A cold surface and moving air feel different, and the repair needs to address the actual route through which air passes. If water also enters, record where it first appears rather than assuming it follows exactly the same path as the draught.

Look for a dropped or uneven leaf

A leaf that catches the frame or threshold may have dropped out of alignment. One edge can press firmly into its seal while another leaves a gap. Increasing the pressure at a single locking point will not necessarily put the entire door back into a correct closing position.

Our front door dropped or catching guide explains the accompanying movement symptoms. If the handle has become harder to lift as the draught developed, mention both changes. uPVC door adjustment considers hinges, keeps and compression together rather than treating the cold air as a reason to replace the whole door.

Inspect visible seals without pulling them out

Look at safely accessible gasket sections for splits, flattened areas or corners that have pulled away. Dirt on the mating surfaces can also affect contact. Wipe accessible surfaces gently and note any damage, but do not remove lengths of seal to take a sample before the replacement profile has been identified.

A thicker strip is not automatically better. An unsuitable seal can stop the leaf closing properly and increase strain on the lock. The existing profile and its intended position need checking. Our seal replacement service covers this component choice; adjustment remains a separate consideration if the leaf does not meet the frame evenly.

Letterboxes and the lower edge

Air felt directly through a postal opening may involve its flap, brushes, cowl or surround rather than the perimeter gasket. Watch whether the flap returns closed after post passes through. A damaged letterbox is assessed through letterbox replacement, not by compressing the whole door harder against its frame.

At floor level, first distinguish a gap under the leaf from air entering through the nearby frame joint. Do not cover drainage openings or add material that prevents normal closure. Describe the lower-edge symptom and any catching at the threshold so the repair can address the arrangement actually fitted to the entrance.

What a lasting repair needs to address

A door may need adjustment, gasket renewal or replacement of a separate fitting, and more than one fault can exist together. Sealing a visible gap while ignoring a dropped leaf can leave the door difficult to lock. Equally, adjusting sound hardware will not replace a torn gasket.

If other openings feel cold, draughty window fixes covers window-specific faults without assuming they share the door's cause. For this entrance, use the form below to describe where air enters and what happens when closing it. A free in-person quotation can confirm the relevant repair without a guessed phone price or pressure to fit a replacement door.

Questions

Frequently asked

Why is the draught strongest at one corner of my entrance door?

Uneven leaf alignment or local gasket damage can leave one corner less tightly closed than the rest. The position of the gap and any catching help identify which needs attention.

Will thicker draught tape improve my uPVC door's seal?

Not necessarily. Material that is unsuitable for the closing gap can obstruct closure and strain the lock. Check the gasket profile and leaf alignment rather than adding thickness by guesswork.

Can a letterbox draught be fixed by adjusting the door hinges?

A gap through the postal opening is a separate fitting fault. Its flap, surround and draught features need checking; hinge adjustment does not restore a broken letterbox flap.
