uPVC Door Will Not Lock: Causes, Fixes and Costs
A door that will not lock is a security problem rather than an inconvenience, so it is worth understanding what has gone wrong before anyone talks about a new door.
The vast majority of these faults come down to four things: a door that has dropped out of alignment, a worn multipoint mechanism, a failed cylinder or hinges that have loosened. All four are repairable parts.

The warning sign most people ignore
If you have to lift, shoulder or pull the door to get the handle up, the locking hooks are already fighting their keeps. Every time you force it, the small gearbox inside the door takes the strain, and eventually it snaps, usually on a cold morning when you are in a hurry.
Booking a realignment while the door still locks with effort is far cheaper than replacing a mechanism after it fails.
Matching the symptom to the fault
- Handle needs lifting hard: the door has dropped and needs hinge and keep adjustment
- Handle spins or feels spongy with nothing happening: the gearbox has failed
- Key turns freely but nothing locks: the cylinder cam or the gearbox is not engaging
- Key will not turn at all: worn or damaged cylinder, or a bent key
- Door catches the frame at the top or the side: hinge wear or seasonal movement
- Draught and whistling around the edge: perished weather seals and lost compression
What we do on the visit
We diagnose before fitting anything. Adjusting the hinges, resetting the keeps and easing the frame often restores smooth operation with no new parts at all. Where a gearbox, cylinder or handle has genuinely failed, we replace it with a quality branded part carried on the van.
If your door still has an older euro cylinder it is worth upgrading to an anti snap, anti pick and anti drill version while we are there, and we can supply keyed alike sets so one key opens front and back doors.

Why does my door only lock if I lift the handle hard?
The door has dropped a few millimetres, so the locking points no longer line up with their keeps. Realigning the door now usually prevents a snapped mechanism later.
Can you repair a composite door or only uPVC?

The door has jammed shut with us outside. Can you get in?
In most cases yes, and we aim to gain entry without damaging the door. Where the mechanism has failed completely we replace it and leave the door working normally.
