uPVC Door Not Locking: Causes, Fixes and Costs

A door that will not lock is a security problem rather than an inconvenience, so it is worth understanding what has gone wrong before anyone talks about a new door.
The vast majority of these faults come down to four things: a door that has dropped out of alignment, a worn multipoint mechanism, a failed cylinder or hinges that have loosened. All four are repairable parts.

If you have to lift, shoulder or pull the door to get the handle up, the locking hooks are already fighting their keeps. Every time you force it, the small gearbox inside the door takes the strain, and eventually it snaps, usually on a cold morning when you are in a hurry.
Booking a realignment while the door still locks with effort is far cheaper than replacing a mechanism after it fails.
Matching the symptom to the fault
- Handle needs lifting hard: the door has dropped and needs hinge and keep adjustment
- Handle spins or feels spongy with nothing happening: the gearbox has failed
- Key turns freely but nothing locks: the cylinder cam or the gearbox is not engaging
- Key will not turn at all: worn or damaged cylinder, or a bent key
- Door catches the frame at the top or the side: hinge wear or seasonal movement
- Draught and whistling around the edge: perished weather seals and lost compression
What we do on the visit
Start with diagnosis, rather than a shopping list of replacements. Alignment work at the hinges and frame keeps, together with easing the surround, can restore easy movement using the existing components. A worn-out gearbox, cylinder or handle instead needs a suitable quality branded replacement from our van stock.
An older euro cylinder is also an opportunity to consider anti snap, anti pick and anti drill protection during the appointment. Keyed alike cylinders are an option where you want the same key to operate both the front and rear entrance.

uPVC door hard to lock
A uPVC door hard to lock is the stage before one that will not lock at all. If you have to lift the handle with both hands, pull the door in or lean on it, the locking points are dragging on the keeps. That usually means the door has moved, not that the lock has failed yet. A uPVC door adjustment at this point is much cheaper than a broken gearbox later.

Why does my door only lock if I lift the handle hard?
Even a drop of a few millimetres can put the bolts out of line with their frame keeps. Correcting that alignment before more force is needed usually avoids a subsequent mechanism failure.
Can you repair a composite door or only uPVC?
We repair uPVC, composite and aluminium doors. The locking hardware is broadly similar across all three.
The door has jammed shut with us outside. Can you get in?
In most cases yes, and we aim to gain entry without damaging the door. Where the mechanism has failed completely we replace it and leave the door working normally.
Will the repair be done on the first visit?
Usually the van's stock of cylinders, operating gear, handles and hinges lets us finish at that appointment. We agree the quotation before starting the work.
Why is my uPVC door not locking when the handle goes up?
If the handle lifts but the locking points stay put, the gearbox has usually broken inside. It needs replacing rather than adjusting.
Is it safe to leave a uPVC door that will not lock?
No. Secure it another way and get it looked at quickly. If the property cannot be made safe, use the 24 hour emergency call out.
Will lubricating the lock make it easier to lock?
It can help a stiff cylinder or dry locking points, but it will not fix a door that has dropped or a broken gearbox.
