Cost to Replace a uPVC Door Lock: What Affects the Price
By the Newcastle Window and Door Repairs team
Last updated:
The cost to replace a uPVC door lock depends mainly on which part of the lock has failed. A uPVC door lock is really several parts working together: a cylinder you put the key in, a gearbox the handle operates, a long locking strip down the door edge and keeps on the frame. Replacing one of those is a very different job from replacing all of them.
This guide explains what drives the price and repeats the ranges already shown in our other cost guides. It is guidance, not a quotation; the final price is confirmed after we have seen the door.

We identify the failed part first, so you only pay for what the door needs.
Which part has failed?
This is the single biggest factor. If the key is stiff, snapped or lost, it is usually the cylinder alone. If the handle lifts but the door will not lock, the gearbox has normally gone. If the door locks only when pushed hard, the lock may be fine and the door simply needs realigning. Getting this right first is what keeps the bill down.
Existing price ranges
These are the ranges already published in our uPVC door repair cost and key will not turn guides, repeated here so they are in one place.
- Euro cylinder replacement: around £60 to £130 fitted
- Snapped key extraction and cylinder change: around £70 to £150
- Multipoint gearbox replacement: around £150 to £280 fitted
- Multipoint lock mechanism replacement: around £150 to £280 fitted
- Door realignment and adjustment: around £70 to £120
Cylinder type
A basic euro cylinder sits at the lower end of the range. Higher security anti snap cylinders cost more, and keyed alike sets across several doors are quoted per set. If you are replacing a cylinder anyway, the step up in security is often worth it; see anti snap lock upgrades.
uPVC door lock replacement
- The handle drops loosely and no longer lifts the locking points
- The key turns all the way round without throwing the lock
- A grinding or clicking noise from inside the door edge
Mechanism make, length and availability
Multipoint mechanisms come in many makes and sizes. The backset, the distance between handle and cylinder, the length of the strip and the number and type of locking points all need to match the door. Common sizes are easier to source. Older or less common mechanisms can take longer to find and may cost more, or need a compatible alternative.
Where only the centre gearbox has broken, some mechanisms let that part be changed alone. Others are one piece, so the whole strip is replaced. See uPVC door mechanism replacement for how we decide.
Door condition and alignment
A new lock in a door that has dropped will strain and fail early. If the door needs realigning or the hinges are worn, that work is part of doing the job properly and adds to the price. It is still far cheaper than replacing the mechanism twice.
Whether the door is locked shut
Replacing a lock on an open door is straightforward. If the mechanism has failed with the door locked, it takes extra time to open it without damage before the new part goes in. Our guide to a uPVC door that will not open covers that situation.
How it compares with windows
Window locks work differently and have their own ranges. Our window repair costs guide lists those, alongside hinges, handles and seals.
Getting an accurate price
Send a photo of the lock edge of the door, showing the faceplate and any writing on it, and a photo of the handle from both sides. Tell us what the key and handle do. That is usually enough to identify the mechanism family. We give a free in-person quote and confirm the price before starting. To book, request a quote or call.

Questions
Frequently asked
Is it cheaper to replace the cylinder or the whole lock?
The cylinder is the cheaper part. It only fixes key problems, though; if the gearbox has failed, the cylinder alone will not help.
Does replacing a uPVC door lock mean a new handle too?
Not always. If the handle still works and suits the new mechanism, it can stay. Some handle sets are replaced at the same time where the spindle or spring has worn.
Why do uPVC door lock prices vary so much?
Because the job ranges from swapping a cylinder to replacing a full multipoint mechanism, and mechanisms vary in make and length.
Can I get a price over the phone?
Photos help us give an idea, but we confirm the price at a free in-person quote once we have seen the lock and how the door sits.
