Condensation Inside Double Glazing: Which Side Is It On?

Condensation between the panes of double glazing means the seal has failed: moisture has got into the sealed unit, and the fix is a replacement unit in your existing frame. Condensation on the room side or the outside is something else entirely.
Condensation on windows worries people, partly because the same words describe three completely different situations. The important question is which surface the water is sitting on.

Between the panes: the sealed unit has failed
If you cannot wipe the moisture away from either side, it is inside the cavity. The perimeter seal has broken down, air has got in and the drying agent is saturated. This is a repair, and it means a new sealed unit rather than a new window. Our misted double glazing page explains how that unit replacement works.
On the room side: warm damp air meeting cold glass
Water on the inside face that wipes off is normal condensation, not a fault in the glass. It appears where humid air from cooking, washing, drying clothes indoors and breathing meets the coldest surface in the room.
Improving ventilation is the answer. Use trickle vents and extractor fans, dry washing outdoors or in a vented space, keep lids on pans and keep background heating steady rather than in short bursts. If the frame is draught free but the glass is still very cold, low emissivity glass in a replacement unit will help.

How to reduce condensation on the inside of windows
Room-side condensation is a moisture problem first and a glass problem second, so the aim is to move damp air out of the house before it settles on the coldest surface. A few habits make a noticeable difference within days, especially in bedrooms first thing in the morning and in kitchens and bathrooms.
Leave trickle vents open through the colder months. They are designed to let a small, steady flow of fresh air through without the heat loss of an open sash, and closing them traps every litre of moisture produced indoors. Run extractor fans while cooking or showering and for a while afterwards, and close internal doors so steam does not drift into cooler rooms.
Drying washing indoors releases a surprising amount of water. Where possible, dry clothes outside or in a room with the window ajar and the door shut. Keeping the whole house at a moderate, even temperature also helps, because rooms left unheated become the cold spots where moisture collects.
If one window streams while others in the same room stay clear, look at the window itself. A perished gasket, a dropped sash or a gap at the frame lets cold air chill the glass edge, and those are seal and draught faults we can repair.
Misted double glazing repair

On the outside face: usually a good sign
Dew on the outer pane on a clear morning generally means the glass is doing its job. Very little heat is escaping to warm that outer surface, so it cools to dew point overnight. It clears as the day warms up and needs nothing done to it.
When condensation comes with damp on the cill
Persistent water pooling on internal cills, black mould in the reveal or damp plaster can also point to failed gaskets, poorly seated beading or blocked frame drainage letting rain in. That is repairable, and we check drainage and seals as part of any inspection.
