Replacement Windows Cost: What Affects the Price

By the Newcastle Window and Door Repairs team

Last updated:

The cost of replacement windows varies more than most people expect, because every window is made to measure. Two windows that look similar from the street can differ a lot in price once size, material, glass and access are taken into account.

This guide explains what drives the cost of new windows. We are a repair first business, so it also explains when a repair is the cheaper and better option. Replacement windows are quoted individually after we have seen them, so there are no figures here.

Size and shape

Larger windows need more frame and more glass, so they cost more. Shape matters too: a standard rectangular casement is simpler to make than a bay, a bow, an arched head or a window with lots of separate opening sashes. Each extra opener adds hinges, handles and locking gear.

Frame material

uPVC is the most common choice and usually the most economical. Timber costs more and needs more upkeep, but suits older and period properties. Aluminium frames are slim and strong, with a price to match. The colour and finish affect the price as well, with foils and painted finishes costing more than plain white.

Glazing specification

Double glazing is standard, and triple glazing costs more. Safety glass is needed in some positions, such as low windows and next to doors. Obscure glass, decorative patterns, Georgian bars and solar control coatings all add to the cost.

Replacement windows

  • Misted or blown glass with a sound frame, which means glass only
  • Stiff, dropped or draughty windows, which usually means hardware or seals
  • Frames that have rotted, cracked or distorted beyond repair

Access and fitting

Ground floor windows are the simplest to fit. Upper floors may need ladders or scaffold towers, and awkward access, such as over a conservatory or extension, adds time. Removing the old window, making good the opening and sealing the new frame inside and out are all part of the fitting cost. If the opening has damage behind the old frame, that may also need attention.

Hardware and security

Handles, locks, restrictors and egress hinges vary in specification. Upgraded locking or locking handles add a little to the price. Bedroom windows on upper floors may need hinges that open wide enough to escape through.

When a repair is cheaper

Most window faults are not reasons to replace the whole window. A misted unit, a broken pane, a worn hinge, a failed lock or tired seals can each be fixed while the frame stays. That usually costs a fraction of a new window and causes much less disruption. Our window repair costs guide lists the existing price ranges for those jobs.

Replacement starts to make sense when the frame itself is rotten, split, badly warped or no longer secure. Our guide on whether to repair or replace a window explains how to judge it.

How to get an accurate quote

Count the windows you are thinking about, note which floor they are on and take photos inside and out. Tell us what is wrong with them, as we may be able to suggest a repair instead. We give a free in-person quote. For more about how we approach new windows, see replacement windows, or request a quote.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is it cheaper to replace all my windows at once?

Doing several windows on one visit can make the fitting more efficient, but there is no need to replace sound windows. We look at each one and only quote for those that need it.

Do replacement windows cost more on upper floors?

Often a little, because access takes more time and equipment, especially over extensions or conservatories.

Does triple glazing cost a lot more than double glazing?

It costs more because the units are heavier and need suitable frames. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the house and the room.

Why do window replacement quotes vary between companies?

Because of differences in frame material, glass specification, hardware, fitting method and what is included in making good. Comparing like for like matters.
